In terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) came into operation. This bursary program provides poor and working-class students in South Africa with free, fully subsidized higher education and training. The goal of The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is to provide financial aid to students from working-class and poor families so they can attend public universities and technical and vocational schools.

ABOUT NSFAS PROGRAMME

The South African government would gradually implement “fully subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working-class South African students” on December 16, 2017. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Bursary Scheme was established as a result of the funding’s five-year phase-in.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Before applying, applicants must ensure that they meet the following minimum entry requirements:

  • South African citizen
  • Receive a SASSA grant
  • Applying to a TVET College or a public university with a total household income of less than R350 000 annually Already registered as a university student with a total household income of less than R 122 000 annually Passed grades 9 and 10 to receive funding to study at TVET College Passed Matric to receive funding to study at University Registering for the first time for an undergraduate qualification at a public university or registered for a National Certificate Vocational/ report 191 program at a public TVET College

If you meet the following criteria, DO NOT APPLY:

  • Student from another country who is not a citizen of South Africa. Their annual household income is greater than R350 000. They have a previous tertiary degree and have already applied for and received funding.

COVERAGE VALUE

The following study-related costs can be covered by the DHET Bursary:

  • Registration fee
  • Tuition fee
  • Subsidized book allowances
  • Prescribed learning materials (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
  • Subsidized accommodation (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
  • Subsidized meal allowances

HOW TO APPLY

You can apply in one of three ways:

1. METHOD:

  • If you want to apply online, follow the steps below on the NSFAS website: 1) Create your myNSFAS account here: When registering for an account, you will be required to provide the following information: https://my.nsfas.org.za/mynsfas/selfservice.html username, password, ID number, phone number, and email address. 2) You can then log in with the username and password you chose. 3) Fill out the application by clicking the “apply” button. 4) After you have filled out all of the required information (don’t leave any fields blank), you can upload electronic copies of your supporting documents (as listed below). To receive your reference number, click the “submit” button after uploading all of your documents.

METHOD 2: At your closest NYDA Centre

  • 1) Go to the NYDA center or office that is closest to you. 2) A worker at the NYDA center will walk you through the application process and give you a form to fill out. 3) Fill out the form in capital letters with a black pen and sign it in the designated spots. 4) Submit your application form and any supporting documents (as listed below). Make certain that your supporting documents are not older than three months and are certified on the front of the page.
    5) A receipt card with a bar code will be sent to you.

METHOD 3: At a Financial Aid Office on campus/ computer lab

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

Send clear copies of the following supporting documentation (the submission of these documents is required; your application will not be considered if any of them are missing):

  • Payslips, employment letters, and pension advice (not older than three months) (do not submit SASSA slips) Unabridged birth certificate (certified copy and electronic copy if you do not have an ID document or ID card) Unabridged birth certificate (certified copy and electronic copy if you do not have an ID document or ID card) Unabridged birth certificate (certified copy and electronic copy if you do not have an ID document or ID card) Contact information (cell phone number or email address where NSFAS can communicate with you throughout the application process and provide feedback on the outcome of your application) NSFAS Consent Form pdf—completed and signed by parents or guardians If you are disabled, complete and include the NSFAS Disability Annexure A (.pdf) If you are an orphan, complete and include the NSFAS Declaration Form (.pdf)—to be signed by an Isibindi Child Youth Care Worker or a social worker from the Department
