To avoid being rejected by the nsfas board, candidates should make sure they meet the following minimum entrance requirements before applying:
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients are eligible for funding. Applicants whose combined household income is not more than
- R350,000. A person with a disability: Students who began their education prior to 2018 and have a combined household income of no more than R122 000 per year are eligible.

What paperwork is required to apply for NSFAS?
- A copy of your identification is required.
You will need a copy of your ID to complete your registration. Make sure you upload a copy that shows both sides of your ID card if you have one.
To submit your personal information for validation and verification, you must have a signed NSFAS consent form from your spouse, parent(s), or guardian. You confirm that you have the consent of all relevant parties when you accept the applicable terms and conditions.
If you rely on your spouse, parents, or guardians, you must provide the following:
- IDs from the spouse, parent(s), or guardian.
The parent(s), guardian(s), or spouse’s income documentation (pay slip or appointment letter, if applicable)
Provide a copy of an official pension slip or bank statement indicating pension payment if your parents, the person who supports you, or your legal guardian are retired.
Provide proof of registration or acceptance at the TVET college or university for each dependent if you have indicated that they are students.
You Must Offer The Following If you Are Self-Sufficient:
- Proof of income (payslip or appointment letter).
- 1 year’s IRP5 form.
If The Student Is Disabled, They Must Provide The Following
- a Disability Annexure A Form that has been completed and signed (if their information is not pre-populated on the online application form).
Along with the application form, you are required to provide evidence of your disability as well as a quote for assistive devices. The approval procedure for funding assistive devices is identical to that for financial aid.
You can arrange to purchase your assistive device through the student disability unit at the university or FET college where you are going to study if your application for financial aid is approved and you have been informed of the final approval amount from NSFAS. The assistive device can be purchased on your behalf by the university or FET college.
Vulnerable Students (Children Under 18 Years), Must Provide:
- A social worker must complete and sign a Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
Other Nsfas Online Applications Required Documents
- Retrenchment letter.
- Provide Death certificate/s if either of your parents is deceased.
- Divorce decree.
