INTRODUCTIONS TO NSFAS
In accordance with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was established.
NSFAS is a bursary program that provides free higher education and training to poor and working-class South African students.
The mission of NSFAS is to provide financial assistance to students from low-income and working-class households who wish to attend public universities and technical colleges
INTRODUCTION TO UNISA NSFAS PROGRAMS
Former President Jacob Zuma declared on December 16, 2017, that the South African government will gradually implement “totally subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working-class South African students.”
The money would be phased in over a five-year period, resulting in the establishment of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Bursary Scheme.

Why not take a bridging course?
- Bridging courses are intensive short courses for high school students interested in attending university.
- They are intended for students who are unsure about their university preparation, do not have the appropriate subjects for the course they wish to pursue, or who need to catch up on a few years of schooling.
- Although the disciplines taught in bridging courses do not count toward your degree, they might be valuable in bringing you up to speed before beginning a degree.

- Students enrolled in engineering, business, nursing, architecture, traditional Chinese medicine, and information technology may be affected.

Unisa’s Short Learning Programs
- Short Learning Programs (SLPs) at Unisa are designed to provide “just in time” and “just enough” learning to address a specific learning need defined by individuals, organizations, or society as a whole.
- SLPs are provided by centers within Colleges’ various academic divisions.
- Each program has its own set of content and contact information.
- You can also email ucl@unisa.ac.za with any questions.
Only a limited number of programs will have the option to apply online as part of a pilot initiative. - 2019 will see the addition of more programs.
