The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a program that was developed in accordance with it.
Low-income and working-class South African students can receive free higher education and training through the NSFAS bursary program.
The goal of NSFAS is to support low-income and working-class students who want to enroll in public universities and technical colleges financially.
INTRODUCTION TO THE NSFAS BURSARY PROGRAM
On December 16, 2017, the then-president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, announced that the country’s government would gradually implement “totally subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working-class South African students.”
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Bursary Scheme would be established with the money spread out over five years.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY
Prior to applying, candidates must make sure they match the following minimal admission requirements:
- Obtain a SASSA grant if you are a South African citizen.
The household’s total annual income is less than R350,000.
Are you currently enrolled as a student at a TVET College or a public university and have an annual household income of less than R122 000?
You must have completed ninth and tenth grade in order to be eligible for funding to attend TVET College.
Passed Matriculation to be eligible for funding from the university.
first-time enrollment in a public college or university for an undergraduate degree or a National Certificate Vocational/Report 191 program.
If you don’t fulfill the following prerequisites, you shouldn’t apply: a foreign student who is not a South African national
- The household earns more than R350 000 annually.
- Have you completed any higher education in the past?
- Already received funding and submitted a request
VALUE OF COVERAGE FOR NSFAS BURSARY 2024
- The DHET Bursary will cover the following study-related costs:
- The registration fee is
- Fees for instruction
- allowances for books that are paid for
- Learning materials that have been prescribed (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
- Subsidized lodging is available (up to a certain amount, as set by NSFAS)
- subventioned meal allowances
HOW TO APPLY FOR NSFAS BURSARY 2024
You can submit an application in one of three ways:
METHOD 1:
Visit the NSFAS website for more details (follow the steps below to apply online).
- To create your myNSFAS account, visit https://my.nsfas.org.za/mynsfas/selfservice.html.
- You will be asked to provide the following information when creating an account:
- The email address, phone number, ID number, and username are all mandatory fields.
- You can then log in using the username and password you chose.
- To finish filling out the application, click the “apply” button.
- You can upload electronic copies of your supporting documents after you have completed all relevant fields (don’t leave any blanks).
- To obtain your reference number, click the “submit” button after you have uploaded all of your documents.
METHOD 2:
Go to an NYDA Center in your area.
- Fill out an application form at an NYDA center or office near you.
- A worker at the NYDA center will walk you through the application process and give you a form to fill out.
- Fill out the application form in capital letters with a black pen and sign it in the designated spots.
- Complete the application form and attach any necessary supporting documents (listed below).
- Make sure your supporting documents are not older than three months and are signed on the front.
- You will receive a receipt card with a bar code via mail.
METHOD 3:
- At a Financial Aid Office/Computer Lab on Campus
DOCUMENTATION TO BACK UP YOUR OPINION
- Send clear copies of the following supporting documents (the submission of these documents is required; Your application will be rejected if any are missing):
Paystubs, letters of employment, and details about pensions (not older than three months) (SASSA slips should not be included with your submission.) If you do not have an ID document or ID card, an unabridged birth certificate is a document that contains all of the information about (both certified copy and a digital copy) IDs for guardians and parents (certified copy and electronic copy) Certified and digital copies of the parent or guardian’s death certificate, if applicable - (certified copy and electronic copy) Contact information (phone number or email address where NSFAS can interact with you during the application process and provide feedback on your application’s outcome) Parents must complete and sign the NSFAS Consent Form in PDF format. SASSA should not be counted as part of a household’s income.
