The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened 2023 Online Application for citizens South Africa to apply for financial support. This support seek to help new applicant in Universities and Tvet Colleges in South Africa the accepts Nsfas Scheme. These Support from Nsfas are:

University in South Africa

  • Cover Accommodation
    According to the university’s actual costs (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Cover Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Cover’s  Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Cover’s Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

Tvet College in South Africa

  • Cover accommodation in an urban area for R24,000 per annum
  • Cover accommodation in a peri-urban area for R18,900 per annum
  • Cover accommodation in a rural area for R15,750 per annum
  • Cover Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Cover Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding and should apply for support

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Who should not apply for nsfas government support

  • Students that have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).

Supportive Documentation for Nsfas

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document/ ID card (certified copy and electronic copy)
  • Unabridged birth certificate (if you do not have an ID document or ID card) (certified copy and electronic copy)
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents (certified copy and electronic copy)
  • Parents/ guardians death certificate (if applicable) (certified copy and electronic copy)
  • Payslips/ employment letters/ pension advice (not older than 3 months) (do not submit SASSA slips. SASSA should be excluded from household income) (certified copy and electronic copy)
  • Contact details (cellphone number/ email address where NSFAS can communicate with you throughout the application process, as well as to provide feedback on the outcome of your application)
  • NSFAS Consent Form pdf– completed and signed by parents/ guardians
  • If disabled, complete and include the NSFAS Disability Annexure A (.pdf)
  • If orphaned, complete and include the NSFAS Declaration Form (.pdf) – to be signed by an Isibindi Child Youth Care Worker/ a social worker from the Department of Social Development and submitted to an Isibindi Centre/ NYDA office

Nsfas Application Requirements 

Applicants should make sure that they meet the following minimum entry requirements before applying for a financial support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

  • South African citizen
  • Receive a SASSA grant
  • Total household income is R350 000 or less per annum
  • Applying to study at a TVET College or public university
  • Already registered as a university student with a total household income of under R122 000 per annum
  • Passed grade 9 and grade 10 to receive funding to study at TVET College
  • Passed Matric to receive funding to study at University
  • Registering for your first time at a public university for an undergraduate qualification or registered at a public TVET College for a National Certificate Vocational/ report 191 programme

How do I Check my NSFAS Status?

Students who have already apply for support from Nsfas can check if they are eligible for financing by logging into myNSFAS. Those who have not yet gotten any feedback on their applications should keep an eye on their application progress. Kindly do the following steps:

  • Kindly Login to the application on the NSFAS online platform at the official NSFAS website: my.nsfas.org.za
  • Please input your username, password, and click on SIGN IN.
  • After search for Track Funding Progress and click on it.
