Applications for financing through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for 2024 must be submitted within the next week.

The NSFAS funding application period for the 2023 academic year began on September 2023, and will end on January 31, 2024.

As of last Friday, the scheme’s online application portal had received a total of 1 131 419 applications, of which 156 700 were from beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

  • “All SASSA beneficiaries have received instant funding approval, pending registration at any of our public universities or Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
  • “NSFAS will release application results for those who applied for funding for the first time and returning students on 06 February 2023, while the funded list for continuing students has been released today,” Higher Education and Training Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande said.

Preparation of the media on the condition of status for the post-school instruction and preparing area for the 2024 scholarly year on Tuesday, the Priest encouraged fruitless candidates to pursue NSFAS choices by presenting the pertinent supporting reports between 20 January and 20 February 2023.

He said all application choices, including the alluring choice and allure processes, will be accessible to candidates through the myNSFAS gateway available by means of the NSFAS site at www.nsfas.org.za.

NSFAS will make upfront payments to institutions to cover the costs of enlistment, education, and living expenses for candidates during the first few months of their academic journey while they wait for their application results.

The upfront installment plan for payment to colleges and TVET schools is currently being completed, and payments will be made by the end of January 2024.

“This means that all NSFAS-funded students will be registered by all the institutions without paying an upfront registration fee. Those who have applied for NSFAS finding for 2023 are encouraged to log onto their myNSFAS accounts to track their applications,” Nzimande explained.

By adding NSFAS on WhatsApp at 078 519 8006 or dialing *120*67327 to track their application status, NSFAS applicants can also access their application updates using a new WhatsApp line and a USSD code.

The scheme has sent staff members to colleges and universities all over the country to help with issues related to funding. These issues include the process of exchanging data with colleges and universities to guarantee seamless data integration and the registration of students for the new NSFAS systems.

Eligibility criteria and conditions for financial aid

The Minister stated that additions and refinements to the qualifying criteria have been approved with regard to the 2023 NSFAS eligibility criteria and conditions for financial aid. These include the following:

  • Only the cost of tuition for the duration of the qualification can be covered by TVET college students enrolled in occupational programs.
TVET students with an occupational qualification may only be eligible for allowances if they participate in simulated training. However, it should be noted that NSFAS allowances are not available to students enrolled in occupational qualifications with employment contracts.
Under the condition that they did not exceed the TVET N+ Rule, TVET college graduates will be funded for an undergraduate degree regardless of the benefit they would have received from applying the N+ rule at the TVET college level.

First-time students (FTENs) must achieve a progressive course credit pass rate of 55% by 2023 while continuing university students must achieve a 50% pass rate.

To continue receiving funding from NSFAS, all returning university students must satisfy ongoing academic eligibility requirements.

“It must also be noted that academic progression criteria will increase from 55% to 60% over time. The N+ Rule for distance university students will be reviewed as of 2024.”
