The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is back to help young people in South Africa achieve their full potential.
This bursary program is designed to assist outstanding students who require financial assistance in their studies.
NSFAS provides financial help to students in South African universities and technical and vocational education and training institutions to cover the costs of registration and tuition, as well as allowances for books, food, transportation, and lodging (TVET).

You can apply online: www.nsfas.org.za
If you are Already Registered with NSFAS, This is how to make changes to your NSFAS account information:
- Go to nsfas.org.za and log in.
- On the ‘already registered’ page, enter your username and password.
- Sign in by clicking the’sign in’ button.
- Delete the wrong cell phone number and replace it with the right one under ‘My Personal Details’ (the same can be done with other incorrect information)
- Select ‘update details’ from the drop-down menu.
- The new cell phone number will receive a one-time pin (OTP).
- Once you have the OTP, you will be requested to input and submit it on the NSFAS website.
- Your information will be updated after this is completed.
- Changes to contact information can still be made manually.
This entails sending a certified copy of an ID book or smart card, as well as an affidavit declaring that the mobile phone number has changed (both the old and new numbers must be noted), to uds@nsfas.org.za.

NSFAS registration is required.
To make an NSFAS profile, follow these steps:
- Visit nsfas.org.za for more information.
- Select ‘MyNSFAS Account’ from the drop-down menu.
- Create an account and a profile.
- You should receive an acknowledgement from NSFAS within a week of submitting your application.

- Students who are receiving NSFAS funding for the first time must complete the NSFAS Bursary Agreement form.

Step 1:
- You will receive an email with a link to sign up for online services; click the link to continue.
Step 2:
- After entering your ID number, an SMS will be sent to your registered mobile phone number with a One Time Pin (OTP).
Step 3:
- To continue with the agreement signing, type in the received OTP.
Documents to back up your claim
Before applying for funding, make sure you have certified and legal copies of the following documents:
- Your South African identity card or document (or an unabridged birth certificate if you are younger than 16 years old).
- Your parent’s and/or guardian’s identification (or death certificate where applicable).
- Income statement in the form of a pay advice, a letter of employment, or a pension statement in the form of a pension statement (SASSA slips are not required and SASSA should not be included as household income).
- A consent form, which you can get here and must be filled out with your parent’s or guardian’s signatures.
Applications that do not include a consent document signed by all of the people whose incomes have been stated will be rejected and considered incomplete. - If you have a handicap, please fill out the Disability Annexure A and submit it with your application at www.nsfas.org.za.
Please note that all certified documents must have a stamp that is no more than three months old.
- If you are a South African citizen with a household income of R350k or less, are enrolled at this institution, and have not been approved for NSFAS financing in 2018, you are eligible to apply.
- You are a South African citizen with a family income of less than R350k, and you are enrolled at this institution but have never applied for NSFAS financing.
- You are a South African citizen with a household income of R350k or less, and you need assistance to attend a public university or TVET college in 2023-2024.
Please note: that if you have previously applied for 2021 on www.nsfas.org.za and have an application reference number, your application will not be considered.
- With the following exceptions, you already have a bachelor’s degree, diploma, or postgraduate degree:
- Architecture / Architectural Technology (BTech)
- Engineering (all disciplines), Cartography, and Forestry (BTech)
- Bio kinetics, Biomedical Technology, and Biotechnology are all BTech degrees.
- Chiropractic, homeopathy, and all nursing BTech
- BTech – Clinical or Dental Technology, Emergency Medical Care BTech – Clinical or Dental Technology, Emergency Medical Care BTech – Clinical or Dental
- Education Postgraduate Certificate
- LLB with a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting
- Applicants can use the campus computer lab to apply, and they can also contact the financial aid office for help with their applications.
