Qualifications: credits, modules and NQF levels

The number of notional study hours necessary to achieve the learning outcomes is expressed in credits.
Study time, assignments, and exams are all included in the fictitious hours.
One credit is equal to ten notional hours in the credit rating system.

For example:

  • A Higher Certificate consists of 120 credits, divided into 10 x 12 credit modules.
  • A 12-credit module is equivalent to 120 notional hours.
In a 15-week semester, this entails at least 8 hours of study every week.
  • A particular amount of credits, split down into smaller units, is required for a qualification.
  • Undergraduate modules at Unisa are normally 12 credits.
Each module is assigned to a particular NQF level.
A 360-credit bachelor’s degree, for example, is made up of 30 12-credit courses.

A bachelor’s degree may consist of

  • between 8 and 10 modules of 12 credits each at NQF level 5
  • between 10 and 12 modules of 12 credits each at NQF level 6
  • 10 modules of 12 credits each at NQF level 7

These levels follow on from one another. When choosing a module, you must first have passed the module at the lower level. Before you can be awarded a qualification, you must have completed the required number of credits. The modules must be completed at the required NQF level.
