how much does nsfas pay 2024-2025
Because attending a university or college comes with a lot of monthly costs, NSFAS gives their student’s allowances every month to help with those costs.
In addition to tuition fees, attending a university or a TVET college entails a lot of other costs, like buying books, stationery, food, and toiletries.
By implementing an allowance system that covers the majority of these additional costs, NSFAS has assisted its students.
Students who are eligible for a government bursary will be eligible to receive a student allowance, which is money to cover costs related to their studies.
Beneficiaries of the NSFAS receive a monthly student allowance, which typically begins when academic activities resume. These allowances are paid out in cash, either to the student directly through NSFAS Wallet or to the student through the institution.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) determines annual increases for allowances. The needs and costs of each student are taken into consideration when funding them.
The bursary includes the following allowances, according to the NSFAS website:
UNIVERSITY
- Accommodation: amount is the actual amount that the university charges. The private cost cannot exceed university housing costs.
- Transport: R7 500 per year (up to 40 km from the institution)
- Living allowance: R15 000 per year
- Book allowance: R5200 per year (only applies at universities)
- Personal Care allowance: R2900 per year
TVET

- in the peri-urban area – R18 900 per year
- in a rural area – R15 750 per year

- Personal Care allowance: R2 900 per year
