Which costs associated with your education are covered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)?
Beyond tuition, there are numerous other costs associated with higher education. For instance, some students may require accommodations during their study time, while others may need to purchase specific learning materials. Through its student allowance system, NSFAS hopes to cover any additional expenses.
What is a student allowance?
A student allowance, which covers costs associated with studying, is available to students who are eligible for a government bursary. Beneficiaries of the NSFAS receive a monthly student allowance. These allowances are paid out in cash, either to the student directly through NSFAS Wallet or to the student through the institution. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) determines annual increases for allowances. The needs and costs of each student are taken into consideration when funding them. When academic activities resume at the end of January, NSFAS typically begins to pay qualified students allowances.
What type of allowances does NSFAS provide?
The bursary includes the following allowances, according to the NSFAS website:
UNIVERSITY

What has changed in the NSFAS allowance system?
- In order to cover students’ sanitary and toiletry needs, NSFAS now includes a personal care allowance in its bursary program. Additionally, students should be aware that NSFAS no longer offers university students book vouchers. Instead, students receive a cash allowance to spend on useful instructional materials.
Are student allowances monitored?
- There is no way to monitor how students spend their cash allowances in NSFAS. NSFAS is of the opinion that students ought to be treated like adults and ought to have the financial freedom to use the cash voucher in the manner that best suits them. Students should use this opportunity to learn how to manage their money and responsibly spend their allowance.
