The College of Cape Town began as a regular high school in 1900 and changed its name in 2002.
Its initial aim, after changing to a college, was to give tertiary education to Coloured and black South Africans.
Athlone College, Cape College, Sivuyile College, and Maitland Technical College/Western Province Technical College were officially merged to form the College of Cape Town on February 1, 2002, after the South African government decided to rationalize TVET colleges, resulting in the reduction of 150 colleges in South Africa to around 50.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Learners who have achieved a Grade 12 Certificate with at least a Higher Certificate achievement should consider pursuing a National Diploma at a TVET College.
- Alternative Post-School Programs, commonly known as Report 191 (Nated) N4 – N6 Programs.
- Candidates must have completed Grade 12 in order to be considered (NSC)
New students must enroll in all four subjects in the field. - The number of students enrolled in these programs is limited by DHET prescriptive targets.
- Before receiving a National Diploma, students enrolled in N4-N6 programs must complete the required amount of working hours in the relevant industry field (18 months / 2000 hours for semester programs and 24 months / 2670 hours for trimester programs).
